Ghana and Nigeria set to clash in international friendly

Ghana and Nigeria are set to clash in an international friendly later this month, as confirmed by the Nigeria Football Federation.

The federation announced the match on Saturday and unveiled Nigeria’s squad. However, there has been no official communication from the Ghana Football Association (GFA) regarding the match on their platforms.

This marks the second confirmed friendly match involving the Black Stars, despite the team being without a head coach since the dismissal of Chris Hughton after the Africa Cup of Nations. Despite the coaching vacuum, it seems the GFA has arranged friendlies with Nigeria and Uganda.

The fixture between Ghana and Nigeria is scheduled for March 22 in Marrakech, Morocco.

This encounter will be the first meeting between Ghana and Nigeria since the Black Stars secured victory in the 2022 World Cup playoffs, qualifying for Qatar ahead of the Super Eagles.

Nigeria have notably improved since then, reaching the final of the 2023 AFCON in Ivory Coast, albeit losing to the host nation. In contrast, Ghana’s form has declined, evidenced by their group stage exit in Ivory Coast, leading to the dissolution of their technical team.

Nigeria, currently under the interim charge of Augustine Eguavoen following the departure of Portuguese coach Jose Peseiro post-AFCON, will approach this match with determination, aiming for revenge for their World Cup qualification denial under Eguavoen’s previous stewardship.

Both teams view this friendly as crucial preparation for the upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers in June, where they will face significant challenges.
