In a recent interview held on Home Radio 99.7 FM’s Street Vibes dated 07/09/2024, Berima Ojay, a rising star from the Upper West Region of Ghana, took the opportunity to address a pressing issue within the music industry: the trend of personal attacks in “beef tracks.” Known for his insightful approach to his craft, Berima Ojay didn’t hold back in calling for a more mature and respectful way for musicians to engage with one another.
During his appearance on the program, Berima Ojay advised his fellow artists to stop involving family members in diss tracks or public disputes. According to him, crossing the line from professional rivalry to personal insults is not only immature but also unnecessary. Beefing, or competitive lyrical sparring, is part of the culture of hip-hop and many other music genres, but Berima believes that there are boundaries that must not be crossed.
“There’s no need to insult someone’s family on a track,” Berima Ojay remarked, emphasizing that while competition is healthy and can push artists to do better, it should never become overly personal. He added that focusing on a one-on-one lyrical battle, aimed at musical skills and talent, is the way forward.
Berima Ojay further emphasized that artists should not take everything in show business personally. He explained that the entertainment industry is about performance, creativity, and professionalism. Mixing personal grudges with showbiz often leads to unnecessary feuds that can harm reputations, destroy relationships, and hurt families.
“It’s important to remember that showbiz is not personal,” he continued, advising that disagreements or competition in the music industry should stay within the realm of performance. It’s an environment where creativity thrives through competition, but personal insults detract from the true essence of artistry.
Berima Ojay’s advice is timely, as Ghana’s music scene continues to grow and evolve. Healthy competition has always been an integral part of the industry, fueling the careers of many artists. However, when that competition turns toxic, it affects not only the artists involved but also the fans and the industry at large.
He encouraged his peers to channel their energy into creating better music, refining their craft, and challenging one another in ways that elevate, rather than tear down. Beef tracks should be seen as opportunities to showcase lyrical prowess, creativity, and wit, not platforms for personal vendettas.
Berima Ojay’s message serves as a reminder that music is, at its core, about expression and connection. While beef and rivalry are part of the creative process, they should not devolve into personal attacks. Instead, artists should focus on pushing each other to greater heights through constructive competition, keeping the focus on the music, not personal disputes.
As the Ghanaian music scene continues to shine on the global stage, maintaining a sense of professionalism and maturity is key. Berima Ojay’s advice is not only relevant to his fellow musicians in the Upper West Region but to artists across the country and beyond. Music should unite, inspire, and entertain – and that can only happen when respect is at the heart of every lyric.
