The Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) has on Monday rolled out the regional launch event and workshop for One Country One Priority Product (OCOP) initiative at Mount Soche Hotel in Blantyre.
FAO deputy director general, Ms Beth Bechdol says OCOP seeks to provide knowledge and technical support to farmers in participating countries.
Agriculture minister Sam Kawale says Malawi has chosen to prioritize the revitalization of the banana industry.
“This decision aims to diversify the country’s sources of income with farmers able to earn K8 million annually on a one hectare piece of land, foreign exchange earnings, and staple food options,” said Kawale.
The #FAO deputy head has announced USD 4 million has been set aside towards the Banana production and value chain.
