GYF-UWR Condemns the Series of Killings in Ejura and the Unlawful Use of the Military to Intimidate Civilians

Ghana Youth Federation – Upper West Region Chapter

For Immediate Release                                                         30th June, 2021

The Upper West Regional Youth Federation condemns unequivocally the killings of Ghanaian citizens in Ejura and the use of Military soldiers in the affairs of civilians.

As lawful demonstrators who were protesting the killing of Ibrahim Mohammed, a social media activist who had been insisting that the country needed to be fixed. It is painfully ironic that the Police, who ostensibly do not have answers as yet for the circumstances under which the activist was killed, could then line up with the military to engage in the maiming and killing demonstrating citizens in Ejura in gunman style, as videos and photos of the incidents suggest.

Our history is chockfull with several instances of the deployment of the military and deadly force to subdue protests; and they have almost always ended in the shooting and killing of civilians. One would have thought that, the use of deadly force to control crowds would be the last thing that any democratic government of an independent Ghana would authorise or tolerate. We reject the notion that the only way that authorities know of to de-escalate tension, is the deployment of the military, and that the military’s only knowledge about such matters is the use of deadly force.

We therefore call on His Excellency the President of the Republic of Ghana to as a matter of urgency commission an investigation into the Ejura killings and all other similar killings and ensure perpetrators are made to face the full rigor of the law.

We are also calling on the National Security Minister, Interior Minister and the Defence Minister to resign for failing to protect the very people they were appointed to protect.

We call on Parliament to investigate these killings and make sure those are responsible and made to pay the price.

The youth in this country are watching events that are unfolding and shall be guided by the actions and inactions of those in authority.

We send our condolences to the families of the deceased and we wish speedy recovery to the injured ones.

FOR GOD AND COUNTRY
