On 26th July, 2023, Abdourahamane Tchiani led the Niger Army to cease power from President Mohamed Bazoum, overthrowing the Country’s constitution. In reality, it was liberation of the country from the clutches of neo-colonial France and US. It was not democracy that failed; it was Neo colonialism and Western imperialism that collapsed.
Niger with a population of about 26 million cover a total land area of over 1.2 million Km square (5 times the size of Ghana). The country produces 5% of the world uranium demand and has other minerals such as Gold, oil, ore, coal, etc.
Sadly, the mineral rich country has over 80% of it populates living without access to electricity and other basic amenities as similar percentage live below the poverty line. There was no end in sight anytime soon until the military take over. The citizens got tired of the exploitation from France and want a shift in trade, governance and security. The New leadership are tilting more to Russia and away from France and NATO.
Nigeriens have cut ties with hostile countries like Nigeria and France, their colonial masters. They have banned the export of uranium and other mineral resources with immediate effect. They have closed their borders, airspace and intensify surveillance in readiness to repel any attack from any quarters. They have also directed foreign troops to vacate the country. The combine military troops of both America and France in the Sahel stand at nearly 3,000 (US=1,100+, France=1,500+). Nigeria cut off Electricity supply to Niger.
As ECOWAS meets on Thursday, the military action agenda should be aborted as any such action in Niger would be a proxy war between NATO and Russia. The spill over would be disastrous for the Sahel region and Africa in general. I am sure the West would implore every available means to topple the Military Government or destabilise the whole Niger republic. It did appear more than half of Nigeriens supported the coup. The only viable alternative to this crisis is diplomatic dialogue. It may be slow but it is the best approach now.
