Statement by the Dagaaba Youth Association of the Savannah Region

On the Ongoing Brifor–Gonja Conflict in the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba Area

The Dagaaba Youth Association of the Savannah Region has received with deep sorrow the news of the recent disturbances between members of the Brifor and Gonja communities in the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba area. In just a few days, precious lives have been lost, many have sustained injuries, and several families have been forced to flee their homes in search of safety.

Although our association and members are not direct targets in this conflict, we cannot remain untouched by the pain and uncertainty it brings to the wider community in which we all live. We share in the grief of the bereaved families and in the struggles of the displaced.

We are grateful for the assurances from the Gonja traditional authorities regarding the safety of our members, and we encourage all Dagaaba youth to remain mindful, cautious in their movements, and supportive of one another during this period of difficulty.

As settlers under the leadership of the Gonja traditional authorities, we wish to reaffirm our neutrality in this matter. Our only wish is to see peace restored swiftly, so that all communities — Gonja, Brifor, Dagaaba, and others — can return to their normal lives of farming, business, and coexistence.

We humbly appeal to our revered chiefs, elders, opinion leaders, youth, and the government to continue every effort that can help calm tensions and open the way for reconciliation. Violence can only deepen wounds, but peace will leave blessings for generations to come.

May wisdom, patience, and brotherhood guide all of us in this trying moment.

Signed ✍️
Andara Charles
