With low compliance rate of the Covid-19 safety protocols in the Upper West region and the nation at large, coupled with the surge in cases in other parts of the country, the region has also recorded 8 new infections.
This revelation was made by Mr. John Maakpe, the Regional Health Promotion Officer and Head of the Covid-19 Risk Communication Team to the media on Thursday, August 5, 2021.
This comes days after the Police in the Wa Municipality undertook a Covid-19 sensitization exercise to educate people on the need to continue adhering to the safety protocols and distributed free facemasks to people at the central business district.
According to him, out of the 8 new infected persons, 6 had a travel history out of the region but revealed all of the infected persons were in a stable condition and self-isolating.
Hinting of a testing facility at the Wa Municipal hospital, he said contact tracing was also ongoing to ascertain those who might have got infected by coming into contact with the infected persons.
In the breakdown, Wa Municipal has recorded 6 cases with Lambussie district and Lawra Municipal having one each as of August 5.
Mr. John meanwhile, called on the media in the region to intensity public sensitization on the importance of adhering to the Covid-19 safety protocols.
“We appeal to you to use your platforms to help educate the general public on the need to observe 2-meter physical distance in public places, frequently wash/sanitize hands, avoid crowded areas as much as possible, cover mouth/nose when coughing/sneezing and properly wear facemask when in closed public spaces, ” he charged.
On the type of variant recorded in the new cases, Mr. John disclosed that Gene Sequencing had still not been done to determine the particular variant (s) of the infections.
“Kindly be informed that gene sequencing has not been done on these cases, and so we do not yet know the type of variants involved. What is important is that the aforementioned public health measures are very effective against all the known variants currently circulating globally,” Mr. John explained.
With the total of 506 Covid-19 cases in the region since its outbreak in 2020, the region has 8 active cases and 19 deaths.
