Barcelona has confirmed that “Messi shall not be staying on at FC Barcelona. Both parties deeply regret that the wishes of the player and the club will ultimately not be fulfilled.”
Despite the fact that in the last few days everything was on track and everything pointed towards the deal being completed in the next few hours, right now Leo Messi staying at Barcelona looks further apart than ever from becoming a reality.
La Liga’s announcement of an agreement with investment fund CVC to give the competition an economic injection looked to have the Argentine’s renewal all but closed, but the opposition to the so-called ‘La Liga Impulso’ project from Barca and Real Madrid means it would be impossible for the club to keep hold of their number 10.
According to ‘Marca’, Joan Laporta and his directive met with the player’s representatives to analyse the situation. According to the information from said source, the meeting ended up being a frustrating one and Messi currently looks to have a foot-and-a-half out the Camp Nou door.
Following on from this, ‘RAC1’ highlighted that the Argentine communicated directly to the club that, faced with the current situation both at a sporting and economic level, he would not be willing to sign a new contract. And it looks like Barca’s conundrum doesn’t have a solution.
The European Super League, the background to Barca’s stance
The aforementioned ‘La Liga Impulso’ plan gave the club the economic means necessary to accomodate Messi without having to carry out the multiple player departures that the club were working on. However, both Barca and Real Madrid showed their open rejection of said project for the same reason – the European Super League.
In this regard, and always according to the aforementioned sources, Barcelona’s CEO Ferran Reverter has reportedly played a key role. Sources close to the negotiations between La Liga and CVC highlight that he had a role as an almost ‘double agent’. He appeared interested in the agreement to know first hand what it would involve for the financial situation of the club, while at the same time always knowing that Barcelona would end up rejecting the proposal (along with Real Madrid) due to the European Super League project.
Laporta is already looking at how to communite Messi’s departure
For that reason, among others, Barca were displeased with the agreement reached by Javier Tebas’ institution and now everything points towards Messi staying at the Camp Nou being further away than ever. In fact, ‘Marca’ reports that Joan Laporta and his close team are studying the best way to communicate the situation to the fans.
For weeks everything has appeared to be going to plan, with the feeling that Messi’s renewal was about to be announced any time soon. However, Barcelona and football fans around the world have now been dealt with a huge shock – if there are no new developments, the Argentine will leave his boyhood club almost out of the blue.
That being said, if Messi’s departure is confirmed, the economic situation at the club would change radically. All of the deals that they were working on and the economic juggling they were doing were all being carried out with the goal of making room for the exorbitant salary of their number 10. If he were to leave, that would completely turn around the situation of a number of players in the first team.
