Hearts of Oak midfielder Sulley Muntari has been backed to return to Black Stars ahead of the 2022 World Cup play-off against Nigeria this month.
Ghana is set to announce its squad for the crucial tie with Hearts of Oak’s National Chapters Committee spokesperson Kobby Jones pushing for Muntari’s inclusion.
The former AC Milan and Inter star returned to competitive action in February after signing a one-year deal with Heart of Oak to end a three-year hiatus from football.
He has performed creditably well for the reigning Ghanaian champions. Last Friday, Muntari was in great form as Hearts of Oak defeated Asante Kotoko 2-1 to clinch the 2022 President’s Cup in Accra.
“Sulley Muntari has demonstrated to us that with his age and all that he’s achieved in football, he can come to our level and play quality football,” Jones told Precise FM.
“If we are being truthful to ourselves, he deserves a call up to the Black Stars. Vincent Abubakar with his age displayed a splendid performance for the Cameroon team in the recent AFCON.”
“His performance today against Kotoko must speak for him, everyone is advocating for his inclusion in the Black Stars squad because of his performance. He deserves the opportunity,” he added.
Muntari, 37, last played for the Black Stars in 2014. He was dismissed from Black Stars camp during the World Cup in Brazil for an “unprovoked physical attack” on management member Moses Armah.
He has since not been invited despite apologising.
Ghana will host the first leg on March 25 at the Cape Coast Stadium with the return leg taking place four days later in Abuja.
