Wa, Ghana – The report by a five member committee set up to conduct a comprehensive probe into the recent death of a two year old boy at the Upper West Regional Hospital has finally been presented to the Regional Minister Dr. Hafiz Bin Salih.
The Committee composed of Issaaka Alhasssan, a retired Deputy Director of Nursing, Detective Corporal Richman Ayittey, Upper West Regional Police CID; Aseidu Nimako, Attorney General’s Department in the Upper West Region; Alfred Anzagrah, Ghana Health Service and Yakubu A. Gafaru of Media General who was later replaced with Morris Banaanwini of EIB-Network to avoid conflict of interest since he was believed to be a relative to the deceased.
The report is a one hundred and twenty page document with detailed findings on the death of a two year old boy, waiting to be reviewed by the Regional Minister who constituted the Committee.
Earlier media reports said the deceased was given a referral from Boli CHP Compound to the old Regional Hospital now Municipal Hospital.
He allegedly met his untimely death due to carelessness on the part of some workers at the referral facility.
Dr. Bin Salih in an interaction with the Media today during the presentation of the Committee’s report, said after reviewing the findings, he would proceed to implement the recommendations.
But he was also quick to add that, if the implementation of the recommendations were beyond his power as Regional Minister, he pass it on to an appropriate authority to implement them.
He noted that, staff of the hospital were going through some challenges but indicated that the actions or “modus operandi” of some health workers were not favouring the region.
While giving assurance that he would as a matter of urgency liase with the appropriate authorities to ensuring quality healthcare delivery in the region, he was also emphatic that he would ensure staff of all health institutions in the region “turn a new leaf”. He commended the Committee for the awesome work done.
The Upper West Regional Minister also announced ongoing accreditation process of the newly constructed Regional Hospital and once the process was completed by the NHIS the facility would be open for business.
