Sometimes, I wonder whether we, the people of the Upper West Region, truly understand the privilege of having one of our own occupying the third-highest office in the Republic of Ghana.
Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin is not just another politician. He is the Speaker of Parliament, a statesman whose influence extends beyond political parties and regional boundaries. Yet, it often appears that we do not celebrate, appreciate or utilize his presence and office as much as we should.
Across Ghana, many regions would consider it a great honour to produce a leader of Bagbin’s stature. He has spent decades serving this country with dedication, integrity and distinction. From his years as a Member of Parliament to his current role as Speaker, he has consistently demonstrated leadership, wisdom and a commitment to national development.
For the Upper West Region, his contributions have been enormous. Whether in education, healthcare, agriculture, sports, youth empowerment or community development, his fingerprints can be found on countless initiatives that have positively impacted lives. His concern for the region has never been hidden and his commitment has never wavered.
What makes his story even more remarkable is that despite reaching the pinnacle of public service, he has remained humble, accessible and deeply connected to his roots. He continues to identify with the struggles and aspirations of the ordinary people of the Upper West Region.
Yet, one cannot help but notice that whenever Speaker Bagbin returns home, the enthusiasm and recognition he receives often do not reflect his status or contributions. We sometimes roll out grand receptions for visitors and personalities whose impact on our region is limited, while giving less attention to a man whose achievements have brought national prestige to our doorstep.
This is not about politics. It is about gratitude.
It is about recognizing a son of the soil who has dedicated most of his life to public service and has become one of the most respected figures in Ghana’s democratic journey. It is about acknowledging a leader whose office alone places the Upper West Region in a unique and enviable position within the country.
As a region, we must learn to celebrate excellence wherever it comes from. We must learn to honour those who have elevated our image and opened doors for future generations. We must appreciate our heroes while they are still alive and actively serving.
Speaker Bagbin represents more than himself. He represents the hopes, possibilities and potential of the Upper West Region. His success is our success. His achievements are part of our collective story.
The day we fully appreciate the value of Speaker Bagbin is the day we begin to understand the importance of honouring our own. Until then, we risk overlooking one of the greatest blessings and assets our region has ever produced.
The Upper West Region should not only be proud of Speaker Bagbin. We should celebrate him, support him and accord him the respect befitting his office and legacy.
