The ongoing limited voter registration exercise in Wa, organized by the Electoral Commission (EC), witnessed an incident where two individuals attempted double registration but were swiftly detected by registration machines.

Mr. Ben Alaglo, the Wa Municipal Electoral Officer, disclosed this information during a visit by the Ghana News Agency (GNA) to the registration center. He explained that the initial intention was to involve the police, but they issued a warning and allowed the individuals to leave. According to their explanation, they believed they had registered in 2016, which led to their attempt to register again.

Mr. Alaglo further emphasized the consequences of attempting double registration and urged potential voters to heed the warning. He stated, “If anyone has already registered, he or she should not attempt registering again because the machines will detect them, and they will be made to face the law.”

During the GNA’s visit to the registration center, it was observed that over 40 people had successfully registered and received their ID cards. Notably, there was no significant queue, indicating that the process was proceeding smoothly.

The Municipal EC director expressed his satisfaction with the progress, stating that when he arrived at the office at 0630 HRS, there were already twelve people waiting to be registered. He had anticipated a larger turnout and noted, “I thought by the time I get here, the yard will be full.”

The registration process commenced at 0800 HRS and, notably, this center was the first to access the database in the region, making it the first to begin registration activities.

Mr. Louis Arthur, the EC Technician at the registration center, confirmed that the exercise was running smoothly, with no reported challenges related to the registration machines.

The limited voter registration exercise, organized by the EC, aims to provide voter’s ID cards to all eligible voters in the country who have not yet obtained them. This is in preparation for the upcoming District Level Election (DLE) later this year. The 21-day exercise is scheduled to conclude on October 2 and takes place daily from 0800 HRS to 1700 HRS.

The EC had set a target to register at least 1,350,000 individuals in the 2023 Voters Registration exercise, based on projections that this many people may have reached voting age since the last registration exercise in 2020.
