Some Pregnant women and new born mothers receiving care at the maternity ward of the Wa Municipal Hospital have expressed their disappointment over lack of beds for some new born mothers and pregnant women who visit the facility daily for healthcare.
Some of the affected victims who were spotted by Progress news at the facility expressed with deep sorrow that they were admitted over three days ago and have since been sleeping on the floor with their new born babies.
They noted with regret over the development at the maternity ward and appealed to authorities of the facility to improve the situation of the maternity ward as poses health treat to mothers and their new born babies.
Responding to the situation of lack of beds at the maternity ward of the Wa Municipal hospital, the Administrator of the facility Sampson Abu admitted that the current situation of lack of beds at the maternity unit has been existing occasionally due to the increasing and decreasing numbers of pregnant women at the facility.
The administrator of the Wa Municipal hospital however stated that since the establishment of the facility in 1919 it has not seen major facelift which has compounded the situation at the maternity ward due to human development in the municipality.
He recommended to government to build an ultra modern maternity ward for the Wa Municipal hospital with a recovery and lying-in unit to help reverse the difficulties pregnant women and new born mothers go through at the facility especially during the rainy season as it poses health threats to them and their new born babies.
The Wa Municipal Chief Executive Issahaku Tahiru Moomen said the sad incident have not come to the attention of his office and promised to liase with hospital authorities to find a lasting solution to the practice of mothers lying on the floor with their new born babies after delivery.
Mr Tahiru Moomen noted that healthcare of residents in the municipality is paramount to the assembly. He said the assembly has earmarked in its budget to construct two doctors bungalow at the Wa municipal hospital since the assembly took over the facility last year.
The MCE said he will discuss with hospital authorities to convert the construction of doctors bungalow at the facility to the expansion of the maternity ward as the facility has not seen a major facelift over the years.
