The Overlord of the Gonja Kingdom, His Royal Majesty Jira Yagbonwura Bii-Knuto Jewu Soale I, on Monday, January 19, 2026, led a historic grand Islamic prayer session at Nyange in the Savannah Region, marking what many have described as a new chapter in the development of the Gonja Kingdom.

The prayer session, held under the theme “We Pray for Peace, Unity and Redevelopment of Nyange,” was organized under the auspices of the Kamara Clan of the Great Gonja Kingdom, in collaboration with the Yagbonwura’s elders and pioneer imams (Kamaras). It attracted an impressive gathering of traditional rulers, Islamic clerics, political figures, youth leaders, and community members.

Among the dignitaries present were Sonyo Wura Kanyiti, the Nsua Wura, the Dakurpe Chief Imam-Alhaji Soale Abenyele, Alhaji Zankawa-the Larabanga Chief Imam, Alhaji Mour Mousah Bouna from Cote d’Ivoire, and Alhaji Idrisu Kamara Bouna.

The Yagbonwura was joined by the Dakurpe Chief Imam throughout the ceremony, underscoring the unity between traditional authority and Islamic leadership in Gonja land.

Also in attendance were the Savannah Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Alhaji Seidu Imoro and members of the party’s regional executive, as well as the President of the Gonja Land Youth Association, Mr. Alhassan Baba Darison and his executives, adding a strong political and youth dimension to the historic gathering.

Following the Quran recitation, three cows were slaughtered as part of the traditional and Islamic rites, after which powerful prayers were offered by various groups and clerics for peace, unity, harmony, and the successful redevelopment of Nyange. Special prayers were also said for the Yagbonwura, the Gonja Kingdom, the president of Ghana, H.E. John Dramani Mahama and Ghana as a whole.

The prayer session comes in the wake of the Yagbonwura’s earlier directive for settlers at Nyange to vacate the area to make way for redevelopment. The traditional authority has consistently emphasized that the decision is aimed at orderly planning, sustainable development, and the long-term progress of the Gonja Kingdom.

Speaking to the media after the prayers, Alhaji Zack Dawudu, a grandson of the Dakurpe Chief Imam, described the event as historic and symbolic.

“This prayer is a sign of peace, unity, and development for Gonja land. It shows that Gonjas and settlers are ready to move forward together. What we witnessed today will bring progress and harmony to our kingdom,” he said.

Observers and participants described the successful prayer session as a landmark moment, with many noting that the Yagbonwura has made history by using prayer, dialogue, and inclusiveness as the foundation for redevelopment. The event ended on a peaceful note, with renewed calls for cooperation, mutual respect, and unity as Gonjaland embarks on a new path of development.
