On the 26th of July 2025, Ghanaian music icon Sherifa Gunu appeared on TV3’s Showbiz 360, hosted by Giovanni Caleb, where she passionately addressed the current state of the Ghanaian music industry. In a heartfelt conversation, Sherifa urged young artists to consider remixing legendary Ghanaian songs as a way of reviving and preserving the country’s rich musical heritage.
According to Sherifa, the music industry in Ghana isn’t as vibrant as it used to be. She noted that while technology has opened new doors for exposure and creativity, many of today’s songs lack the cultural depth, originality, and emotional connection that older songs carried.
“The industry is down compared to the old days,” she stated bluntly.
In her opinion, remixing old songs from legends like Amakye Dede, Kojo Antwi, A.B. Crentsil, E.T. Mensah, and others can breathe new life into Ghana’s music space. Not only will it introduce the younger generation to timeless classics, but it will also bridge the generational gap between old and new fans.
Sherifa emphasized that these remixes must be done respectfully and creatively, adding modern flavor without losing the soul of the original compositions. She believes that collaborations between the old and new generations can reignite passion, promote unity, and strengthen the industry’s identity on the global stage.
Her advice comes at a crucial time, as many industry stakeholders have expressed concern over the decline in lyrical content, originality, and cultural pride in modern Ghanaian music.
Sherifa’s words are a call to action: embrace the past, remix it with the present, and create a future that honors our musical roots.
As the industry evolves, it’s voices like hers that remind us that our culture, sound, and stories are worth preserving one remix at a time.
