Wechiau, the capital city of the Wa West District in the Upper West Region of Ghana, is noted for its large hippopotamus population. This makes it one of the regional centers for tourism in the nation.

Due to its relevance in conservation and tourism, Rocky Dawuni, a four-time Grammy nominee, has been appointed as the ambassador for the Wechiau Community Hippo Sanctuary and the Avu Lagoon Community Protected Area, which protects the Sitatunga in the Volta Region. Both community-led conservation areas are supported by the Wilder Institute in Canada.

On Thursday, March 11, 2025, an event was organized to welcome the new ambassador, attended by the traditional leader of Wechiau and its environs, tour guides, executive officers, community members, media personnel, and other stakeholders from around Wechiau.

Rocky Dawuni was impressed with the preparations made by the locals for his arrival. He was taken to a nearby village where a women’s group had taken the initiative to replant their lost forest with shea trees. As an advocate for conservation, he applauded their efforts and lectured on easy afforestation strategies.

Next, he visited the Wechiau Community Hippo Sanctuary Shea Butter processing centre, where over 400 women produce shea butter. Notably, the centre promotes sustainable livelihoods and eco-friendly practices.

Rocky Dawuni promised to dedicate himself to promoting tourism in the area, making it one of Africa’s most visited destinations. He concluded the event by performing beautiful music from his catalog.
